Gynecology Q & A

What is gynecology?

Gynecology is an area of medicine which focuses on the care of women and their reproductive systems. Gynecological services are offered at the practice to provide women with the care they need for any and all health concerns. Medical conditions and illnesses can affect women and their reproductive organs. When problems like this arise, the gynecologist will be able to address any concerns the patient is experiencing. Gynecologists can also be trained in obstetrics or the care of pregnant women including delivery. At the practice, the doctor will be able to provide those services as well. Physicians with these specialties are commonly known as OB/GYNs, or obstetricians and gynecologists. With their advanced knowledge of the uterus, ovaries, and other reproductive organs, gynecologists can identify changes in their structure which can affect a woman’s health. Menstrual problems, sexuality, menopause, and infertility will also fall under the purview of the gynecologist.  At North Naples Gynecology and Obstetrics, Dr. Hildahl performs his gynecologic ultrasound exams, providing immediate results to patients who may be experiencing pelvic pain or ovarian cysts.

Why would I need to go to the gynecologist?

The gynecologist is there to make sure that your reproductive health is at its best. It is recommended that women visit the gynecologist’s office annually for “well woman” exams. The physician uses these checkups to monitor the health and how the body is managing its reproductive capabilities. When a patient visits the gynecologist, the doctor will be able to identify any present issues. If care is needed for a reproductive illness, women can receive effective treatments at the practice as well. The gynecologist can also educate women on safe sex methods. Frequently, women visit the office to have birth control pills prescribed, intrauterine devices (IUDs) inserted, and to receive contraceptive injections. The doctor will also be able to guide women through the process of conceiving a child, pregnancy, and giving birth.

What can a gynecologist treat?

A wide range of illnesses or conditions which involve the female reproductive system can be treated by the gynecologist. Heavy, irregular, or painful menstrual periods, urinary tract infections (UTIs), yeast infections, endometriosis, internal cysts, and fibroids would all be treated by the gynecologist.
