Planning for a Baby in the New Year? How We Can Help
There are few things more exciting than expecting a child. Whether you’re planning for pregnancy or already pregnant, it’s crucial to get help from someone you trust.
After completing his residency at the prestigious Mayo Clinic, board-certified OB/GYN Dr. Dean Hildahl has years of experience providing complete obstetric care and more at North Naples Gynecology and Obstetrics in Naples, Florida.
What comes first?
If you’re planning to get pregnant, take advantage of our fertility care and prenatal planning. When trying to conceive, we recommend:
- Preconception counseling to address any health issues
- Prenatal care to prevent or treat any illnesses or infections
- Genetic counseling to review your family and pregnancy history
Dr. Hildahl also discusses ways to improve your diet and exercise to prepare your body for pregnancy.
Paving the way for you and your baby
Tips to keep you and your unborn baby healthy include:
- Regular exercise
- A nutrient-rich diet
- Maintaining an appropriate body weight
- Taking prenatal supplements with a minimum of 400 micrograms of folic acid
We also suggest avoiding alcohol, tobacco, and other harmful drugs to assist your baby’s development.
You’re both what you eat
During pregnancy, you and your baby share one diet. It’s critical to make it as healthy as possible. Dr. Hildahl suggests adding:
Folate
This B vitamin helps prevent premature birth and certain defects. It’s available as a supplement and also found in many foods, such as citrus fruits, green, leafy vegetables, and dried beans, lentils, and peas.
Calcium and vitamin D
Calcium and the sunshine vitamin, vitamin D, are found in foods such as cheese, milk, yogurt, spinach, and salmon, and are also available as supplements. They keep your and your baby’s bones strong.
Protein
You need more protein at this time. The best sources include poultry, seafood, and eggs. Vegetarians and others can benefit from beans, peas, nuts, seeds, and soy products.
Iron
Pregnant women require twice as much iron to ensure enough blood and oxygen for the growing fetus. Insufficient iron increases the possibility of premature birth and low birth weight, and it may lead to postpartum depression.
Sources of iron include poultry, lean red meat, and fish. Dr. Hildahl also recommends prenatal vitamins to make sure you get the nutrients you need.
Make a birth plan
Expecting a baby? Plan for the unexpected. It pays to decide as much as you can beforehand. Outline your best-case birthing scenario with your doctor to help you both prepare.
You usually have plenty of time to get to know your OB/GYN during your pregnancy. When the big day finally arrives, you’ve discussed your baby’s delivery. Should you require a cesarean section (C-section) or induced labor, you already have a team on hand to get you through it.
Your birth plan may include:
- What type of birth you're planning
- What to do if you require a C-section or other intervention
- Whether you want an epidural or other pain medication
- If you’re all right with someone breaking your water
- Plans regarding breastfeeding
- Who should cut the cord
Dr. Hildahl works with you to ensure your baby’s birth is handled how you’d like. Should something unexpected arise, he’s there to help.
